Furry Friends Farm - Sarah and Shannon…

KLANG: When Australians Sarah Wren and Shannon Muche read that dogs had been abandoned on Pulau Selat Kering, they immediately wanted to help.

“We read what had happened when we were in Vietnam and decided that we would help care for the rescued dogs when we came to Malaysia en route to London,” said Wren, 28.

Animal lovers: Muche (left) talking to Wren at the Furry Friends Farm in Kundang.

Both Wren and Muche contacted Furry Friends Farm (FFF) founder Sabrina Yeap as soon as they arrived in Malaysia.

They are currently volunteering their services by helping to take care of the dogs rescued from Pulau Selat Kering at the FFF sanctuary in Kundang near Rawang.

The dogs were dumped on Pulau Selat Kering by Pulau Ketam residents recently with the endorsement of the Klang municipal councillor in charge of the island Tee Beng Lee.

Wren, who owned a pet accessories business in Brisbane before selling it off to travel several months ago, said she was shocked to read about the dogs.

“It is disgusting to know that people can be so cruel as to go out of their way to get rid of the poor strays in such a manner,” she said.

Website developer Muche, also 28, concurred, adding that it would take a lot of time for the rescued dogs to get over their ordeal.

“The dogs are still frightened and frail. It will take a long time for them to be rehabilitated,” she said.

Muche said Tee must ensure that all the surviving dogs on Pulau Selat Kering are rescued.

“He must be made fully responsible to get the dogs back as well as make provisions to rehabilitate them,” she said.

Even some outsiders cared and took time off their vacation to help these lovely creation. I simply don’t understand why are there people out there being that cruel and inhumane, dumping them at a place where they will have no chance of survival. We are all fed with the same food and we drank the same water. I can only conclude that those people lack awareness and education… and appreciation of life. Sometimes, I would rather human not being the dominant species on this planet. Let the dogs be. Afterall, the only time they fight is for food while we human fights for everything… you name it… wealth, power, a parking spot, the last bottle of 100 plus…

Fortunately, not everyone is like that. At least not at Furry Friends Farm… people there are warm, caring and they do their part in helping those in needs. Stop comparing us with those caring and helping out old folks home, orphanage and so on… there are others doing it and we all play our own part in helping those in needs in a different manner. We are helping! If you want to pick on someone, pick on those at Pulau Ketam that knew nothing but only eat, drink, sleep, make money and torture dogs. We are not like them! And those directly or indirectly involved with that big ORG picking on Furry Friends Farm, I really pity you… yes… YOU! You were once an animal lover, but that love for animals in you has long gone, blinded by your support for a greedy and money-hungry ORG who tells you EXACTLY what you wanted to hear… individually… I don’t hate you… not anymore. AllI have is pity for those little cats and dogs under your care…

Kuning… our hero…

Kuning’s no coward — he’s a deep-sea rescuer

Wednesday, June 3rd, 2009 07:26:00

HIS name is Kuning and he’s fast gaining a reputation as a wonder dog, helping animal rescuers bring home fellow canines from the uninhabited islands off Pulau Ketam, Klang.

Indeed, according to pet rescuers, Kuning — who had gone missing two weeks ago — and his fellow pooch- Hitam are touted as the ‘leaders’ for aiding in rescue of 18 abandoned dogs.

Kuning was one of the first batch of dogs left by Pulau Ketam villagers on an isolated island. He swam from the mangroves to the nearest kelong (floating fish farm) where he and Hitam were adopted by the workers there.

Furry Friends Farm (FFF) principal Sabrina Yeap said that Kuning did not know what the rescue missions were about when they first started on May 2.

"We asked for the fishermen’s help but because of the jellyfish and sea snakes, we had discouraged them to go into the water. Unexpectedly, Kuning swam to the island one day. Some of the dogs there followed him and swam back out. It was as though he understood we were trying to lure out the dogs," related Yeap.

"The fishermen would then place cages on the boat and coax the swimming dogs into climbing onto the boats and straight into the cages."

She said the fluctuations between high and low tides had hampered rescue missions but the combined efforts of Kuning and Hitam and the fishermen helped to save time and speed up operations.

"Hitam would eat fish at the kelong and swim out to the island where he would actually cough out the food for the other dogs to eat," narrated Yeap.

FFF managed to rescue 21 dogs, three on their own and the rest with the ‘follow the leader’ style of Kuning and Hitam. Yeap said proudly: "They deserve medals."

Even the kelong workers felt safer with the two around as they proved to be excellent guards, barking and alerting the workers whenever anyone neared the place.

So, when free-spirited Kuning went missing, speculation was rife for about a fortnight about what could have happened — until he was found, safe and sound with veteran webmaster-blogger TV Smith, who was also doing rescue work. Kuning had been mistaken by two independent rescuers for one of the abandoned dogs and carted off for fostering.

But you can bet after a fully sponsored break with free board and breakfast and more, Kuning is back to business of being ‘lifeguard’.

You got tagged!

Yesterday was a really memorable day. For a start, YB Edward Lee of Bukit Gasing Constituency & state assemblyman and his son came to Furry Friends Farm for a personal visit. While they were there, they helped planted some nangka trees on a piece of land beside the cat’s sanctuary at Furry Friends Farm. Some members of the press were present too. TV Smith and Pam, alongside with members of the rescue secretariat were there too! I was so happy to be able to finally meet those others involved in this meaningful rescue mission… unfortunately, we were so lacked of manpower yesterday that I didn’t manage to have chat with them… *sigh*

Although all volunteers were drop dead tired yesterday by early evening, there are something nice to cheer everyone up. 2 furry friends were tagged! The first one was Honey. Honey is a little camera shy, so no pictures, but the second furry friend, Cash, is a celebrity dog. Cash love to have her picture taken.

Cash got tagged!

These tags were donated by volunteers at Furry Friends Farm. More will be made once the tags are deemed suitable for all the furry pals… the tags were so nice I wanted to make one for myself… emoticon

By the way, for those who wishes to see some of our furry friends from Furry Friends Farm in action, be sure to make yourself available on the 4th of July. Furry Friends Farm will be organising a fashion show, featuring 10 of our selected furry friend. Cash will most probably be one of them. If you would like to see them person, be sure to catch us at Bandar Utama’s Central Park from 9am to 12noon.

See you there! :)

Oh ya… for those whom are interested in reading the coverage on Furry Friends Farm last Sunday, you can read them here. I knew there are more but since I can’t read Chinese, I can’t exactly search for those articles online. I’ll post more when I find them… :)

Heated up over deadly dog virus

Filed under: Current Affairs, News, Health

JOHOR BARU: A warning has been issued to dog owners about the spread of a deadly viral disease.

Puppies have a higher risk of contracting parvovirus, or parvo, which kills the dividing cells in a dog’s body, causing bloody diarrhoea, lethargy and loss of appetite.

Johor Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals chairman Dr Edwin Singam told New Straits Times yesterday there had been a recent flare up of the disease, partly because of the hot weather.

"In the 1980s, the disease was always fatal but now there is a chance of recovery if the dog is given early treatment".

Dr Singam, a veterinarian, said as with the common cold in humans, there is no direct medication for parvo.
"An infected puppy has to be quarantined to prevent the spread of the disease to other canines," Dr Singam said, adding that he had just visited an animal shelter where 34 puppies were diagnosed with the disease.

The Companion Animal Rescue Effort Society (CARES), an animal shelter in Lima Kedai near here, is one of several in the city which have found the disease in its dogs.

CARES founder Joseph Chia said about 30 per cent of the 300 rescued dogs at the shelter had been stricken.

"Parvo normally spreads after a wet weather spell, followed by days of intense heat," he said.

Hmm… have to work something out to ensure all furry friends at Furry Friends Farm are properly shaded, cooled and has sufficient drinking water. Although the disease is currently being reported in Johor Bharu but chances of it spreading to or being developed locally are pretty high since the main cause of the disease weather related. Any ideas on what can be done to protect our furry friends at Furry Friends Farm? I’m all ears…

Women team up to save abandoned dogs on island…

By WANI MUTHIAH

PORT KLANG: Two whitewater rafters’ love and compassion for dogs have prompted them to team up to rescue the abandoned animals in Pulau Selat Kering near here.

A dog called ‘Hitam’ swimming back from the island to the pontoons which were set by the pair.

Marjorie Gabriel and Karin Lee, who are based in Kuala Kubu Baru, have so far made six trips to the desolate island.

“We had to do something, as both of us couldn’t bear to imagine the dogs suffering without food and water on the uninhabited island,” said Lee, who is also a Hulu Selangor district councillor.

The duo even brought along a canoe to replenish the food and water on the several pontoons they had constructed around the island for the abandoned dogs.

Both women are volunteering their services with the Furry Friends Farm (FFF) rescue team.

So far, some 30 dogs have been rescued from the 400 which had been dumped on the island.

Gabriel (left) and Lee on board their boat to rescue the stray dogs in Pulau Selat Kering.

The residents had claimed that the dogs were left on Pulau Selat Kering because they did not like the way the Klang Municipal Council dealt with strays.

The matter had raised international ire with global animal welfare groups lambasting the authorities for allowing it to happen.

Gabriel said it was getting more difficult to rescue the dogs as they seemed to have retreated further into the mangrove-covered island.

We found Kuning!

Yesterday, while I was at Furry Friends Farm, I was greeted with one hell of a good news that made my day…

THEY FOUND KUNING!!

I am not going into details on how Kuning was found, where was Kuning for the last 1 week nor will I speculate on who DOG-NAPPED Kuning and the excuses given by them… oh, did I mention that some ORG was involved in recovering Kuning? Wanted to know more? Why not ask the ORG instead? They knew the entire story the best… afterall, they are the screen-writrer, the producer, the director, the casting crew and also the chaffeur…

But anyway, it’s a relief to know that Kuning is now safe and sound, pending a check up by a vet to certify Kuning’s condition medically before returning Kuning to his owner…

Now, apart from Kuning’s update, Furry Friends Farm will need more volunteers this coming Sunday to help out with various chores and work at Furry Friends Farm. We are really short-handed. So, if you are interested in helping out our furry friends, do get in touch for arrangements.

More updates to follow soon… :)

Dude! Where is my car?!

Man, if this were to happen to me, I won’t know what to do next… I felt so sorry for those whom are affected by this. These pictures were live updates sent to me moments after the incident took place… honestly, I fear for the safety of my friend and the people working in buildings around that area…

Hopefully, the authority will bring in experts to evaluate the current soil condition and take remedial steps into assuring the safety of the surrounding buildings. Let’s pray that such incidents will never happen again…

KULAI: Even the heavens cried yesterday for 16-year-old Lai Ying Xin who was kidnapped and killed recently.

The rain, which had been pouring from the break of dawn, however, stopped just in time for her funeral at 9.45am.

Tears flowed as 200 of her friends from SM Sultan Ibrahim Kulai paid their last respects at the Hainan Association funeral parlour.

Two of her best friends, Lee Sher Lin and Chin Hui Ni said in their eulogy: "Jiejie (sister), don’t worry and go in peace. We will be best of friends forever. May you rest in peace in the afterworld."

The girls, who were sobbing uncontrollably, also promised to take care of Ying Xin’s mother for her.
Ying Xin’s mother, Chia Siew Peng, 45, wept silently as she listened to the eulogy.

Phang Hai Dong, an instructor in "che ling" (Chinese yoyo, a performing art, described Ying Xin as a bright girl who taught the 12-year-old members of the Chinese Che Ling Association the yoyo.

"She was always patient with the young ones. It is heartbreaking that she has to leave us like this."

Several youngsters from the association performed the "che ling" outside the funeral parlour as her casket was being taken to the crematorium.

Her parents stayed behind at the funeral parlour in accordance with tradition that the "grey-haired should not bury the black-haired".

Ying Xin was kidnapped and killed on Sept 11. Her partially-charred body was found dumped.

The post-mortem revealed that she had been strangled before her body was set ablaze.

Ying Xin’s last rites tomorrow

KULAI: The remains of murdered schoolgirl Lai Ying Xin, who was found burnt last Tuesday, were sent to the Kulai Hainanese Association yesterday for the last rites.

Her mother, Cia Fiew Peng, said the cremation would take place tomorrow at Ban Foo in Jalan Kulai, Kota Tinggi.

Cia, 45, said her daughter’s good friends had bought a dress for her.

"They also bought a pair of shoes for Ying Xin to wear.

"They said Ying Xin loved to dance, and so she would have liked to wear a beautiful dress and nice shoes," Cia said when met at her house in Taman Gunung Pulai here yesterday.
Lai, 16, a student at SM Sultan Ibrahim Kulai, was believed to have been abducted between 9pm and 10pm on Sept 11.

A police report was lodged the next day after her parents received a call asking for a RM60,000 ransom for her release.

Four suspects have since been detained. The schoolgirl is believed to have been strangled.

Ying Xin’s body released to family

Ying Xin’s body released to family

JOHOR BARU: The body of kidnap-murder victim Lai Ying Xin was released by police to her family a week after she was brutally killed.

Her body was brought to the Hainan Association building in Kulai for prayers yesterday. Ying Xin’s mother Chia Siew Phen, 45, said the girl, 16, would be cremated at the Ban Foo Crematorium in Kulai tomorrow.

Among those who were at the mortuary to claim Ying Xin’s body were her father Then Song, 48, and sisters Ying Hui, 20, and Ying Xian, 18.

Chia said she hoped those responsible for her daughter’s death would be brought to justice.

Johor police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Mohd Mokhtar Mohd Shariff said DNA testing confirmed that it was Ying Xin and that a report would be forwarded to the deputy public prosecutor for further action.

“We hope to solve the case as soon as possible and bring justice to the victim’s family,” he said.

Ying Xin’s body was found in Kulai last Monday.

Four suspects have been detained and remanded for investigations.

Today’s update on Ying Xin…

Suspects stay in remand

JOHOR BARU: The four suspects, in custody to facilitate investigations into the kidnap-cum-murder of 16-year-old Lai Ying Xin, have had their remand orders extended to Sunday.

State police chief Datuk Mohktar Shariff said the remand orders, which expired yesterday, were extended as police were still waiting for the DNA and chemist’s reports from the relevant authorities.

The remains of Lai Ying Xin, which had been placed at the Sultanah Aminah Hospital mortuary, would be released to her family once the tests had been concluded.

Ying Xin was abducted at a hypermarket in Kulai, where she worked part-time, on Sept 11 between 9pm and 10pm.

Her parents lodged a police report the next day after they received a ransom call.
Ying Xin, a straight-A student of Sekolah Menengah Sultan Ibrahim Kulai, was believed to have been strangled to death and her body burnt.

Her charred remains were found at a site in Kulai on Sept 16 after four suspects led police to the place.

Why is taking the people so long to come up with the results of the test? Can’t those idiots see that the families and friends wanted a closure for Ying Xin? She should have been put to her final resting place and provide a closure for both her and the people around her. No wonder  Malaysians are typically known for their corruption, dumb politics and "tidak-apa-attitude". And I am not suprised that a friend from mine from Canada actually thought we are still living above trees! I can’t wait to see Malaysia to become the laughing stock of the world if there is a change in government because of possible cross-overs by certain MPs! Malaysia would never improve if nothing were to be done to remedy the current issue faced by the country…

Another follow reports on Ying Xin’s kidnap-cum-murder…

Suspects are ‘clean’

KULAI: The four suspects in the kidnap and murder of 16-year-old Lai Ying Xin were not on drugs nor did they have criminal records, said Johor police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Mohd Mokhtar Mohd Shariff.

“They are young boys and the youngest is only 16,” he said when visiting Ying Xin’s house in Taman Gunung Pulai yesterday.

“The special task force is working round the clock to complete the probe as soon as possible,” he said.

Personal briefing: DCP Mohd Mokhtar updating Chia Siew Phen,45, and Lai Then Song,48,about their daughter Ying Xin’s below)case at their house in Taman Gunung Rapat Pulai Thursday.

He added that police were still waiting for the DNA report and test results before they could release Ying Xin’s body to the family.

DCP Mohd Mokhtar said that the investigations papers would be submitted to the deputy public prosecutor’s office as soon as possible and police would recommend that the suspects be charged immediately.

He said the motive of the kidnap and murder was still under investigation, but added that the cause of death was manual strangulation.

Ying Xin’s partially burnt body was found in some bushes in Taman Putri, Kulai, on Sept 16 after the SMK Sultan Ibrahim student failed to return home from her part-time work on Sept 11.

It was learnt that a ransom of RM60,000 was demanded, but police believed that the victim was murdered before the kidnappers contacted the family.

Police arrested the four suspects, aged between 16 and 22, early Tuesday morning and discovered Ying Xin’s body after questioning them.
